Sarah Palin Gets Lie Of The Year Award For "Death Panels"

Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin has received the dubious distinction of being recognized by Pulitzer Prize-winning website PolitiFact for telling The Lie Of The Year.
To refresh your memory, here is the lie (posted to her Facebook page) Sarah Palin told:
Seniors and the disabled "will have to stand in front of Obama's 'death panel' so his bureaucrats can decide, based on a subjective judgment of their 'level of productivity in society,' whether they are worthy of health care."
Sarah Palin, Friday, August 7th, 2009.
PolitiFact says:
Of all the falsehoods and distortions in the political discourse this year, one stood out from the rest.

"Death panels."

The claim set political debate afire when it was made in August, raising issues from the role of government in health care to the bounds of acceptable political discussion. In a nod to the way technology has transformed politics, the statement wasn't made in an interview or a television ad. Sarah Palin posted it on her Facebook page.

Her assertion — that the government would set up boards to determine whether seniors and the disabled were worthy of care — spread through newscasts, talk shows, blogs and town hall meetings. Opponents of health care legislation said it revealed the real goals of the Democratic proposals. Advocates for health reform said it showed the depths to which their opponents would sink. Still others scratched their heads and said, "Death panels? Really?"
Congratulations, Sarah!

Obama and Clinton Most Admired People In America

Joe.My.God posted the results of Gallup's annual poll about the most admired public figures in America.

Barack Obama is the most admired (32% of respondents) with "Still-President" George W. Bush second at 5%.

Interestingly, Hillary Clinton (with 20%) is at #1 among women, where she has been for 13 of the last 16 years (!), while Sarah Palin is second with 11% and Oprah is down to 3rd with 8%.

The questions has been asked by Gallup for 60 years at this time of year and this is the second time ever that the President-Elect has been the most admired man (Eisenhower was the other, in 1952).

More People Watch McCain Speech Than Watched Obama's

Apparently Barack Obama's Democratic presidential nomination acceptance speech and Sarah Palin's "pitbull with lipstick" speech were just lead-ins to John McCain's Republican presidential nomination acceptance speech:

Nearly 39 million people watched Republican presidential candidate John McCain’s acceptance speech on the closing night of the GOP convention Thursday in St. Paul, Minn. That broke the week-old convention record of upwards of 38 million viewers set by Sen. Barack Obama only the week before.

Sen. McCain amassed an audience of 38.9 million viewers for his speech on two fewer channels than were carrying Sen. Obama’s speech Aug. 28 to 38.38 million viewers, according to data from Nielsen Media Research.
Interestingly, Josh Marshall notes that more women watched Obama's speech (19.9 million) than McCain's speech (19.5 million).

Poll on Vice-Presidential Selections

Daily Kos is publicizing a poll of Clinton voters on their impression of Vice Presidential candidates Sarah Palin and Joe Biden.

On 72nd Birthday, McCain Picks 44-Year-Old Former Beauty Queen For Veep

John McCain has picked current first-term Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to be his running mate, the first woman to be on a Republican ticket, 24 years after it happened on a Democratic ticket. He is thus completely undermining his argument that 46-year-old Barack Obama is too young to be President, since he is picking someone 44-years-old (on his 72nd birthday!) to serve as his vice-presidential pick.
